How to watch DVDs for free in Windows 10?

To help you enjoy your DVD collection, Microsoft offers the Windows DVD Player app in the Windows Store if you updated to Windows 10. Of course, you have to pay $14.99 for it. For some people, I don’t think that they are willing to pay extra $14.99 to play the movies they have already owned. So how to play your DVDs for free in Windows 10 when you don’t have a paid Windows DVD Player app? Here provides you two solutions.

Method 1: Play DVD with VLC on Windows 10

You have to know that the newest version VLC has supported DVD playback. So if you want to play DVD freely on Windows 10, just try VLC. Here's what you need:

  • A DVD-ROM drive, either internal or external.
  • VideoLAN's VLC desktop software, an open-source (read: free to use) media player that includes support for DVD media. (Note that I don't recommend the VLC app in the Windows Store, which is a separate version that does not support DVD playback.)

During the VLC installation process, make sure "Discs Playback" is selected (it is by default). Once it's installed and running, pop in your DVD, then click Media > Open Disc..., or just press Ctrl-D.

In the window that appears next, click Play -- and then sit back and enjoy. I tested this with, appropriately enough, a DVD of "The Simpsons," and it worked like a charm. Your mileage may vary, of course; there are always potential glitches with DVD regions, video codecs and the like.

But for most folks, this is the free and easy path to DVD nirvana in Windows 10. Thanks for the $15 app, Microsoft, but no thanks - From cnet.com

Method 2: Play DVD on Windows 10 freely by ripping DVD

Besides the method one, you also can try the method two to play DVD for free in Windows 10. You can use a DVD Ripper, like Handbrake to rip DVD to Windows Media Player accepted format- the default media player on Windows. However, Handbrake just works in homemade and unencrypted DVD. If your most DVD discs are commercial ones, I suggest you to apply Pavtube BDMagic

This DVD ripper can rip and backup any commercial and region-locked DVD to H.265, MP4, MPEG, MKV, AVI, MOV, etc so that you can play the DVD with a normal media player on Windows 10. Actually, you can use the app to rip DVD and store the DVD movies to DropboxNAS and other personal cloud storage. Under this situation, you can get more convenience DVD movies organization and management and watch these DVD movies on Windows 10 via DLNA.

One point you must notice is if you want to be free, you just can use its free trial version. And for Mac users, please turn to the equivalent DVD Ripper for Mac.
